Apple to fill mispriced orders for eligible buyers

July 28, 2010

Apple Inc. has agreed to sell qualified customers a computer model at the price at which it was mistakenly listed on its online educational store, the Cabinet-level Consumer Protection Commission said July 27.

According to the CPC, Apple will deliver the models to qualified buyers, that is, students, teachers and school staff, at the discounted price of NT$19,900 (US$620), instead of its regular price of NT$47,710. Apple will notify the buyers via e-mail within 24 hours, it added.

Apple mispriced its Mac Mini with 8G on the company’s online Store for Education July 23, bringing in orders for 41,518 units before the price was corrected at around 7 p.m. that day, said Wu Cheng-hsueh, a CPC section chief.

During a teleconference meeting with the CPC July 27, Apple offered an apology over the incident and agreed to deliver the models to eligible buyers once their identity as a student, teacher or school staff member is verified, Wu added.

As only payment by credit card was accepted for the orders, it is still unclear whether Apple will require that the credit card holder be a student or educational staff member. Many consumers who placed orders are reportedly trying to borrow the necessary identifying documents. (KL-THN)
