The 18-year-old broke the games’ record with 59.94 seconds in the men’s 100-meter freestyle S13 for the visually impaired.
Born with eye dystrophy, Lin started taking swimming lessons in the second grade. He won silver medals in the 100-meter and 50-meter freestyle at the Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled, the earlier version of the Asian Para Games, in Malaysia four years ago.
Lin will also compete in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley in Guangzhou.
Taiwan has sent 77 athletes to this year’s Asian Para Games, which will run through Dec. 19. They will be competing in 12 sports, including badminton, archery, wheelchair tennis and shooting.
The country’s athletes took home 18 gold, 29 silver and 22 bronze medals at the last competition. (ML-THN)
