Taiwan Cafe Cloud Alliance, led by the government-sponsored Institute for Information Industry, garnered an honorable mention in the Global ICT Excellence Awards Oct. 23 at the 2012 World Congress on Information Technology in Montreal, Canada.

The award came primarily for the alliance’s Cafe, Cloud Appliance for Enterprise, developed through cooperative research within the industry, according to the institute. Cafe incorporates a core cloud server, cloud storage, desktop cloud and cloud security, allowing businesses to establish private clouds and independent software vendors to develop cloud application appliances.

Partners in the R&D project were AsusTek Computer Inc., Delta Electronics Inc., Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd., In-Win Development Inc. and Promise Technology Inc., the institute said.

At the 2010 WCIT, the Institute for Information Industry won the Chairman’s Award for leading the development of Taiwan’s information and communications technology sector, creating digital opportunity centers in remote areas of the country and working with less developed nations to reduce the digital divide.

The prizes, presented by the World Information Technology and Services Alliance, “honor organizations that have demonstrated exceptional achievement in using ICT to benefit societies, governments, individuals, organizations and the private sector.”

The WITSA was founded in 1978, with members now representing more than 90 percent of the global ICT market, according to the organization’s website. It hosts the biennial world congress, which this year ran Oct. 22-24. (THN)
