“Taste Taiwan,” a culinary program organized by the Tourism Bureau under the ROC Ministry of Transportation and Communications, is set to debut Feb. 15 on the Discovery Channel across the U.S.

The show documents the eight-day tour of three North American chefs around the ROC, as part of the bureau’s Time for Taiwan campaign launched in 2013 to promote the country’s distinctive gourmet culture.

Nominated through the bureau’s Taste Taiwan chef selection process last October, Michael Ferraro of New York, Bryant Wigger of Los Angeles and Thomas Heinrich from Vancouver, Canada, undertook an expedition to savor the taste of Taiwan.

The program follows the journeys of the chefs from North America to Taiwan and back, profiling their gastronomic adventures and documenting how they produce signature Taiwan dishes and ingredients upon returning home.

Prior to the program, the bureau showcased the results of the initiative in a series of Taste Taiwan events at the chefs’ restaurants in January. Drawing on their firsthand experience with Taiwan’s eclectic cuisine, their creations charmed those who sampled the fare.

In the show, friendly people, breathtaking scenery and a rich gourmet culture were nominated by the chefs as their lasting memories of Taiwan. In addition, they urged viewers to experience the country firsthand.

“For those looking to travel to Asia for the first time, I would recommend Taiwan. It is a perfect gateway country,” Ferraro said.

According to the bureau, the 30-minute show will be available on YouTube for viewers outside the U.S. (YHC-JSM)
