Luodong Cultural Working House is an outstanding example of avant-garde architecture that is attracting visitors from home and abroad to Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan.

The eye-catching structure, situated in the center of Luodong Township, incorporates a fourth floor gallery in the shape of a spaceship. It features a high proportion of steel, giving the building a futuristic, industrial feel.

But the design is not out of synch with its surrounds. It also includes a reasonable proportion of timber, reflecting the long history of Luodong’s lumber industry.

Structure designer Yilan City-based Fieldoffice Architects said it took 15 years to produce a concept that melded the needs and wishes of local residents with modern style.

Something more was required than a rural-themed cultural establishment, Fieldoffice said, adding that the final design delivered a cutting-edge structure reflecting the characteristics of Luodong.

The direction of the architects is proving popular with many visitors. The sky gallery situated on the fourth floor of the building—equipped with a canopy suspended 18 meters above the floor—hosts a wide variety of cultural exhibitions and activities.

Since the building’s launch in 2012, culture aficionados have come to experience local heritage, take in the panoramic view of Luodong and embrace the natural surrounds of the building.

In addition, the ground floor of the facility features a local cultural products market and large stage where a variety of creative and cultural events can be held. (DF-JSM)
