A total of 87 outstanding and veteran nurses working in 26 state-sponsored medical institutions in Taiwan were honored for their contribution to society May 5 by the ROC Ministry of Health and Welfare.

“As well as going above and beyond the call of duty in caring for patients, these nurses are making an invaluable contribution to furthering medical research in Taiwan,” MOHW Minister Chiang Been-huang said. “Their recognition today represents the nation’s highest form of appreciation and praise.

“I believe the awards will inspire more suitably talented individuals to join the nursing ranks and further strengthen health care in Taiwan.”

Chiang made the remarks following presentation of the awards in the categories of new nurses, outstanding performances and veteran services. The event was staged as part of celebrations marking International Nurse Day.

Selected from a pool of 5,937 nationwide, the winners include Hsu Yu-ju—a nurse of 12 year’s standing who cares for patients with Hansen’s disease at Taoyuan City-based Lo-Sheng Sanatorium and Hospital.

“Misconceptions about the chronic infectious disease have created conditions of general fear and discrimination in society,” Hsu said. “My patients welcome me wholeheartedly and are deeply appreciative of the time and effort I dedicate to this role.”

Hsu said Hansen’s often leads to dystrophy in the peripheral nervous system, making many daily chores such as nail-clipping an impossible task. “I have trimmed the nails of my patients for over a decade and understand the joy this seemingly simple task brings.

“One of my most memorable patients was an 80-year-old woman who told me it was the first time in nearly 70 years somebody had held her hands.”

As patients with Hansen’s are segregated, Hsu said many suffer low esteem and emotional stress. “I am like family and will continue taking care of them.” (SFC-JSM)
