Chen Ting-chun successfully defended her 2014 jewelry victory by claiming top spot this year with fold-formed enameled copper series Visual Cures. The Tainan National University of the Arts student was followed by South Korea’s Lee Yojae and Taiwan’s Jhang Hao-han.
Hiawatha Seiffert from Germany swept all comers in objects with his BC28-14-V2A, a metal bowl made from stainless steel bike chains. Taiwan’s Ou Li-ting and Chen Siou-yi finished second and third, respectively.
“Although jewelry may appear small and not all that significant to the eye, it is the product of a unique combination of creativity and technical skills,” Chen said. “The craft is an accumulation of experiences informed by everyday life and constant practice.”
Artists from 40 countries and territories submitted 330 entries to the fifth edition of TIMCC. Each winner received a diploma and cash prize ranging from US$2,000 to US$8,000.
All 28 finalists, including the top place-getters, are currently on display until Aug. 23 at Gold Museum. The exhibition will embark on a worldwide tour at the end of the year, including stops at southern Taiwan’s Tainan Creativity Center and Memphis-based U.S. National Ornamental Metal Museum. (YHC-JSM)
