An exhibition in honor of Taiwan’s Gender Equality Education Day was launched by the Ministry of Education April 19 at Taipei City’s National Taiwan Science Education Center to spotlight government commitment to raising public awareness of the issue.

Named “Crossing Realms: A Gender and Light Journey in the Metaverse,” the exhibition runs through May 11 and combines light projections and immersive experiences to explore diverse perspectives on the relationship between gender and art, family, science, sports and other topics.

Among the highlights is the gender and family section, which guides visitors in reflecting on the definition of a family through the contemplation of gender identity, the distribution of housework and the role of caregivers. The gender and science section introduces female scientists who significantly contributed to the world, including Jacqueline Whang-Peng, a physician and cancer researcher, and Yu Wang, who was instrumental in the development of the field of crystallization chemistry in Taiwan.

The gender and sports section displays outstanding performances of Taiwan female athletes like Chi Cheng, who was a 1968 Olympic medalist in track and field, while the gender and arts section presents award-winning films from home and abroad that tell stories of protagonists that break through traditional stereotypes.

A series of activities will be held on weekends, including magic shows and introductions to ballroom culture, picture books on body boundaries and sexual violence prevention, the MOE said.

According to the ministry, Taiwan committed to the goal of gender equality. It cited the Gender Equity Education Act as evidence, saying that it has been revised five times following its passage in 2004 to further align with societal developments and updated practices. The MOE further designated April 20 as Gender Equality Education Day in 2023 to expand the implementation of gender equality in schools, it added. (YCH-E)
