The National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR) concluded a memorandum of understanding with the National Disaster Management Research Institute (NDMI) Sept. 17 in the Korean city of Ilsan, underscoring bilateral commitment to reinforcing disaster management in the region.

The pact, signed by NCDR Director Chen Hong-yu and NDMI head Oh Keum-ho, centers on collaboration in research, application, training and global collaboration, the National Science and Technology Council said. It added that the Korean institute, affiliated with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, actively advances prevention technologies, data analysis and post-disaster forensics.

Chen noted at the ceremony that the two countries have similar geography and encounter the same types of disasters, and have thus agreed to prioritize joint research on heavy rain, landslides and other emerging risks, adding that reciprocal courses, technology seminars and mutual visits are part of the tool kit for sharing knowledge.

In response, Oh said that the two sides will jointly involve themselves in regional initiatives and global meetings, as well as the sharing of information, implementation of decision-making platforms and evaluation of disaster impact.

The signing of the arrangement ushers in an even closer cooperative mechanism which will facilitate safer, more resilient and more sustainable societies, the NSTC said. (POC-E)
