The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly hosted an event for recipients of the 2025 Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship programs Oct. 20 in Taipei City, according to the MOFA.
Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu and Deputy Education Minister Liu Kuo-wei presided over the event, the MOFA said, adding that over 800 students and official ambassadorial envoys were in attendance.
Wu emphasized Taiwan’s core values of democracy and freedom, and called attention to the country’s accomplishments in economic development and technological innovation. He cited the domestic semiconductor industry, which produces 95 percent of the world’s advanced chips, as evidence.
Wu said that since their inception in 2004, the Taiwan and Huayu Enrichment scholarships have cultivated over 3,000 learners from allies and other like-minded countries. He pointed out that to expand global cooperation in education, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung proposed to double the number of recipients next year from 250 to 500.
Additionally, Wu encouraged the students to cherish their time in the country by actively participating in activities held by Taiwan Alumni Association and 92 other similar global organizations, the MOFA said.
According to the MOFA, Liu urged the young scholars to both study hard to learn Mandarin and to enjoy exploring Taiwan’s diversity in person. (POC-E)
