Red Persecution of the Catholic Church on the Chinese Mainland: Message From Thomas Cardinal Tien

May 01, 1960
There is a great struggle going on in this world of ours, a struggle of the truth against falsehood, of good against evil. Most men are caught in this struggle without realizing its personal implications. Our personal reaction to truth and goodness is the measure of our public attitude towards them in the world around us. If our mind is sharply focused on truth as it s highest ideal, and our will has seized upon the ideal of goodness, then externally, or in the outside world, our actions will reflect our internal alignment. In the portrayal of Communism and the evil results it produces against freedom of religion, against personal and social rights, we should read between the lines and see how many men, outside the "curtains" as well as within, have broken with their ideals of truth and goodness. They, the Communists, are quite logical. They deny God, and therefore deny what is good and true at its very sources. We, on the contrary, profess our belief in God, but often deny that profession by our refusal to follow out the truth of our nature, the goodness it demands of us. I trust that the reading of these pages, showing the terrible sufferings of souls kept apart from God, will make all of us examine our minds once more, and resolve to carry out in fact what we profess in faith. Thomas Cardinal Tien, S. V. D. Administrator Apostolic of Taipei
