Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei and China’s Wang Xinyu won the women’s doubles title at the French Open Championships June 11 in Paris.
The duo defeated No. 10 seeds US’ Taylor Townsend and Canada’s Leylah Fernandes, in a 2.5-hour final. It is the pair’s second tournament after May’s International de Strasbourg.
This is Hsieh’s second French Open doubles trophy, following her 2014 title with China’s Peng Shuai. This win also marks her fifth Grand Slam title in women's doubles and a triumphant return to the court after an 18-month break.
Speaking after the final, Hsieh said the secret to winning was a partnership balance between experience and youthful energy. The players enjoyed the match and assisted each other on the court, Hsieh added.
Despite stark differences between the seasoned Hsieh and the 21-year-old Wang in terms of their playing styles, the two complemented each other well. They reversed the loss in the opening game to come back 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 and win the match.
The French Open is a major clay court tennis tournament held annually at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, named after French aviator Roland Garros. It is the only Grand Slam tournament currently held on this surface. (POC-E)
