Taiwan’s Paper Windmill Theater will stage “Don Quixote’s Adventure—Pegasus” between June 5 and 7 at the second Beijing International Drama Season. It is the first children’s drama troupe from Taiwan to perform at Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts. “By staging the Don Quixote story, we would like to show that people can become great only if they dream,” the company’s Executive Director Lee Yung-feng said.

Founded in 1992, the troupe is known for producing plays where fantasy reigns and the imagination is allowed to roam freely. Its giant puppets and enormous balloon dragons have delighted countless children.

In 2006 the company launched its “Kids’ Smile, First Mile” project. After noting that children in sparsely populated areas receive far fewer resources than those living in the major cities, Lee began raising funds in order to give free performances in all of the 319 townships in Taiwan and also its offshore islands. More than 300,000 children have seen the show.

“The foundation of a country is its next generation, and every kid needs the nourishment of art,” Lee said, who hopes to share his experiences with acting companies in mainland China. (CNA)
