Six artists from Taiwan are to participate in the 2025 Expo Chicago Contemporary Art Fair April 24-27 in the U.S., showcasing the vibrancy of the country’s artistic and creative landscape in the field of video arts.
The Ministry of Culture said that Taiwan’s pavilion, a cooperative effort of the Taipei Cultural Center in New York and Taipei City-based Hong-gah Museum, is listed as a special project for the 2025 expo and carries the theme “Interwoven Timelines.”
Works on display are “Breathing” by Chen Liang-hsuan; “Compound Eyes of Tropical” by Zhang Xu Zhan; “Ladies” by Liu Yu and Wu Sih-chin; “Samurai and Deer” by Hsu Chia-wei; “Somewhere Beyond Right and Wrong, There is a Garden. I Will Meet You There” by Chen Yin-ju; and “Stories of Celluloid: Terra Nullius Data” by Wu Chi-yu.
According to the MOC, the videos are the artists’ meditations on the value of mutual respect amid the ongoing wars and conflicts of the current world. Through investigations into prehistoric civilizations, studies of tribal legends, and analyses of Enlightenment-era texts, the works combine to examine the limitations and complexities of contemporary systems of knowledge, it added.
The pavilion was curated by Zoe Ye, director of the Hong-gah Museum and participant in a curatorial exchange program organized by the TCC in New York and Expo Chicago, the MOC said, adding that more Taiwan curators have been selected for this year’s program with an eye toward increasing the country’s global visibility in the field of contemporary art.
Established in 2012, the Expo Chicago Contemporary Art Fair showcases leading contemporary and modern art galleries alongside a diverse and inventive program of talks, on-site installations and public art initiatives. This year’s event attracted more than 170 galleries from 36 countries. (YCH-E)
