An exhibition showcasing the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts’ vast collection is underway through the end of 2026 at the Taichung City-based institution to give the public an appreciation of the evolution of the nation’s art.
According to the NTMFA, “Arts as Imprints of the Times” was curated by five artists and features pieces selected from the 22,070 items the museum holds. It comprises five thematic areas arranged chronologically to foreground the ways artistic creation has developed in concert with changing times.
“Zhongyuan Style” spotlights the country’s early calligraphy and paintings, while “Revealing the Distinctiveness” shows the state of Taiwan’s art in the early 20th century. “Waves and Impacts” outlines developments in the local art landscape from 1945 to 1979, while “Clashes and Reflections” describes the barrier-breaking search for identity in the 1980s and 1990s, and “Fusion and Reconstruction” focuses on global perspectives and the digital wave since 2000.
The NTMFA said the exhibition includes pieces that are rarely on display or have never been in public view. The exhibit as a whole demonstrates how artists from different time periods have interpreted the zeitgeist through careful selection of subject matters and application of sophisticated techniques, the museum said, adding that it looks into the ways local art pursues its subjectivity while establishing deep connections with global art trends in the future.
