The 8th edition of the Taiwan Film Festival in Australia opened July 24 at Event Cinemas George Street in Sydney, raising the profile of the country’s film industry on the global stage.

The 2024 film “Daughter’s Daughter” was screened during the opening ceremony, drawing nearly 400 viewers. Prominent attendees at the launch included Stuart Buchanan, head of screen for Sydney Opera House, and Benson Wu, CEO of Queer Screen, according to the Ministry of Culture.

In his remarks, David Cheng-wei Wu, director general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sydney, noted that this year is the first time the festival will tour Perth in Western Australia. It also marks the international premiere of the 2024 documentary “Dancing Home,” which delves into the artistic journey of Indigenous Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava, he added.

Additionally, “Repulsion” director Chen Yan-hong was invited to talk with the audience before a screening of the film, the MOC said, adding that Chen was a winner of the Executive Yuan-organized 2024 Golden Harvest Awards in recognition of his portrayal of human struggles through the lens of everyday life.

Supported by the MOC’s Spotlight Taiwan project, this year’s festival is underway through Sept. 6 and will tour Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, the ministry concluded. (POC-E)
