Taiwan’s top 20 brand names for 2011 were announced Sept. 21 by the global branding consultancy Interbrand, which declared consumer electronics giant HTC Corp. the nation’s most valuable brand of the year.

The annual Taiwan top-20 list is the result of a joint effort involving Interbrand, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and BusinessNext magazine. It is intended partly to help Taiwanese companies become more aware of the importance of having a good brand name.

“This year, the value of the Top 20 Taiwan Global Brands has grown by 40 percent,” Interbrand said, adding that the increase in value was due to “the outstanding achievement by many Taiwanese companies.”

“It is also the result of [their] having a global strategy, and understanding the nuances required in individual markets, while retaining a single brand proposition,” Interbrand noted, adding that Taiwanese companies have been very successful in mainland China, “the fastest growing economy in the world.”

Interbrand estimated the value of the HTC brand to be at US$3.6 billion. Acer Inc., the No.1 brand from last year, slid to second place with an estimated brand value of US$1.94 billion. ASUSTeK Computer Inc. came in third at US$1.64 billion.

The consultancy said it made its assessments based on a number of factors, including financial performance, global presence and international brand recognition.

According to TAITRA, HTC is expected to make it to Interbrand’s TOP 100 Best Global Brands list, due to be announced Oct. 5.

On last year’s list, British luxury producer Burberry Group PLC was rated No. 100 with a brand value of US$3.11 billion. (HZW)
