Amid the ongoing EU debt crisis, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) will continue to tap opportunities in mainland China and other emerging markets to boost Taiwan’s exports by 8 to 10 percent, TAITRA Chairman Wang Chih-kang said Jan. 11.

TAITRA’s efforts this year will include holding seven Taiwan brand-name product exhibitions in mainland China, with five in new locations, including Shanghai and border provinces connecting to Central Asia and countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and helping Taiwanese enterprises obtain business opportunities in Brazil and Russia.

Based on TAITRA’s experience in promoting sales in emerging markets last year, Wang continued, business opportunities abound in solar power, flat panels, light-emitting diodes and network equipment. The council will invite buyers from India, Mexico, South Africa, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates to come to Taiwan for procurement talks with local enterprises, he said.

TAITRA will also concentrate on business opportunities stemming from Halal products for Muslim customers, Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organization, the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Wang pointed out.

In addition, the council will invite mainland China to arrange procurement delegations to visit Taiwan in a range of sectors, including automobile electronics components, fine chemical equipment, machinery parts and machine tools.

Furthermore, it will invite Bai Weimin, head of the China Video Industry Association, to lead a delegation to Taiwan to purchase liquid crystal displays from local producers, Wang said. (SB)
