Three leading Taiwan business figures will continue serving as the economy’s representatives on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum Business Advisory Council, the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 16.

Cathay Financial Holdings Co. Ltd. Chairman Tsai Hong-tu, MiTAC International Inc. Chairman Matthew Miao and HTC Corp. Chairwoman Cher Wang will attend the second council meeting of 2012 in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur May 21-24, according to the ministry.

MOFA Minister Timothy Chin-tien Yang commended the three May 16 for their hard work and contributions over the past three years, and invited them to serve in the role for another four years.

Yang expressed the hope that “on this solid foundation, Taiwan’s presence in Asia-Pacific regional economic and trade cooperation will be further enhanced, and public and private exchanges will continue to be implemented, so as to jointly create conditions favorable for even greater Taiwan participation in regional economic integration.”

According to the ministry, the council is an important mechanism through which Taiwan’s business community takes part in dialogue and collaboration on APEC-related issues, and a concrete symbol of partnership relations established by both the private and public sectors.

The heads of state of each member economy send representatives to the council, which each year makes proposals for reference in policymaking. The body’s participation in the annual APEC summit also provides an occasion for Taiwan’s business leaders to be heard on the international stage, MOFA said. (SB-THN)
