An Ocean Affairs Council-organized workshop on coastal revitalization is underway through April 9 in the southern city of Kaohsiung to report on last year’s subsidy projects and roll out a blue beach certification initiative.
The event brought together over 100 participants from local governments and associated teams that collaborated on regional projects.
On the morning of April 8, Director Yeh Chin-chia of southern Taiwan’s National Pingtung University’s Center for Placemaking and Urban-Rural Governance, Ustronger founder Chang Po-jen and Pier-2 Operation Center Director Wang Hui-lin talked about their experiences reviving fishing villages, reclaiming idle spaces and encouraging younger generations to return to their hometowns.
In the afternoon, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology Vice President Hsien Shu-ling expounded on women’s involvement in marine regional revitalization. There were also presentations on governmental achievements in marine safety and ocean culture promotion.
The OAC said that next year’s subsidized projects would center on establishing a robust sea area management and security system, sustainably developing the coastal area and promoting blue-beach certification based on the Foundation for Environmental Education’s Blue Flag program. (POC-E)
