Minister Chen Shih-kai of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications visited Taoyuan Aviation Free Trade Zone in the northern city of the same name May 13 to underscore government commitment to forging a competitive, resilient aviation hub.
Chen attended a briefing about Taoyuan Aerotropolis from the MOTC’s Civil Aviation Administration. The CAA has been actively clearing land for the project, especially the third runway and free trade area, and over 76 percent of the involved households have been moved to other areas through CAA assistance.
The minister also spoke, saying that the TAFTZ project is a major construction project and requesting that the CAA continue their efforts in order to meet the deadline of December 2026.
Chen then paid a visit to the construction site of the third runway and a temporary apron, where the Taoyuan International Airport Corp. and MOTC’s Freeway Bureau showed off their progress and said the completion date is anticipated to be the end of 2028.
In recent years global demand for artificial intelligence and semiconductor products has yielded excellent operating performance numbers for Taoyuan Aviation Free Trade Zone, the MOTC said. According to the ministry, import and export trade volume reached NT$2.4 trillion (US$79 billion) in 2024, a record high. (POC-E)
