Taiwan garnered a record high total of 18 awards at the 2025 Edison Awards, receiving the second most prizes of all participating countries, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said at a news conference June 3 in Taipei City.

Of Taiwan’s winning entries, 14 were developed by MOEA-supported institutions, including Hsinchu County-headquartered Industrial Technology Research Institute, which won three golds, three silvers and one bronze; Kaohsiung City-based Metal Industries Research and Development Centre, which took one gold, two silvers and one bronze; and New Taipei City-headquartered Taiwan Textile Research Institute, which received one gold.

In his remarks, Economic Minister Kuo Jyh-huei noted that the winning innovations were developed in cooperation with industry players to address industry pain points and enhance productivity, adding that the technologies all incorporated artificial intelligence.

Among the gold recipients was ITRI’s Smart Aqua Leak Finder, which features AI-driven acoustic technology and GPS-based mapping that can rapidly identify and locate leaks with 98 percent accuracy. The invention has already been adopted by state-run utility provider Taiwan Water Corp., saving 1,094 tons of water annually, the MOEA said.

NaPoGlass, another notable gold winner developed by ITRI, is used to remove heavy metals from wastewater, increasing water reclamation rates. It has also already been rolled out in the semiconductor and plating sectors to accelerate green transformation, the ministry concluded. (POC-E)
