The Ministry of Environment launched an opening ceremony for the first domestic resource circulation upgrading center on World Environment Day June 5 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting circular economies.

Prominent attendees included Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming, Director General Lai Ying-ying of the ministry’s Resource Circulation Administration and representatives of related industries, the ministry said.

Echoing the theme of World Environment Day, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” the ministry pledged to continue its policy of using recycled resources and encouraging circular design to promote the reduction of plastic usage and waste.

In response to climate change, circular economies are key to fulfilling net-zero transition, the MOENV said, adding that circular design and procurement would serve alongside green marketing as motivating forces propelling change in consumer behaviors and enabling a societal push for sustainability.

According to the ministry, the newly established center will provide services for incubating startups and space for displaying and selling commodities produced within the circular economy. Funding through the green growth fund initiated in May of this year will also be offered for relevant research.

The center was built as part of government efforts to create business opportunities for new startups through holding matchmaking events, the MOENV said. It added that 10 startups are expected to be selected annually for assistance with entry into the market, while 40 brands working in the circular economy will stage exhibits, the MOENV added.

Four main shows are set for this year, the MOENV said, adding that the first, focused on textiles produced within the circular economy, is underway through the middle of July and features green design techniques and smart recycling. (POC-E)
