Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming met with a delegation from ally Haiti led by Foreign Minister Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, July 8 in Taipei City. On the same day, Peng also met with the Lithuania-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group led by Chair Ruslanas Baranovas, the Ministry of Environment announced.

Peng thanked Jean-Baptiste for the ally’s long-standing support of Taiwan and voicing the backing on international platforms. He added that the MOENV will continue to create environmental partnership agreements on climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, forest carbon sink and carbon right systems to assist the allied nation to strengthen climate resilience and response capabilities.

In response, Jean-Baptiste said that deforestation directly and indirectly jeopardize agriculture and fishing in Haiti, posing a threat to food security while frequent earthquakes also challenge livelihoods. He too, anticipated deepening mutual collaboration in aspects related to climate change response, the MOENV said.

Peng welcomed the Lithuania-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group and noted that both Taiwan and Lithuania have set goals of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, offering potential to cooperate on circular economy projects, carbon fees and renewable energy generation.

Peng commented that Taiwan advocates for green supply chains and digital transition as well as cultivation of green-collar professionals. He hoped that Lithuania would support Taiwan in its response to the European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. (POC-E)
