The Ministry of Environment staged a forum on sustainable food July 16 in Taipei City, spotlighting government commitment to societal transformation to a sustainable lifestyle.

This marked the fourth meeting organized by the MOENV’s Green Lifestyle Partnership advocating for a net-zero lifestyle, the ministry said, adding that three other forums had already been held on sustainable offices, consumption and travel in February, April and June this year, respectively.

Speaking at the July 16 forum, MOENV Chief Secretary Tsai Meng-yu noted the importance of eating local and seasonal food and reduction of food waste. The forum was hosted by Warren Kuo, professor emeritus of National Taiwan University’s Department of Agronomy, who encouraged consumers to support low-carbon and environmentally friendly ingredients to facilitate production transition and the reshaping of dietary culture.

Taipei City-based Anyong Freshmart, Inc. Deputy General Manager Chen Li-tse shared how the company cafeteria offered sustainable foods by citing an example of utilization of all parts of fish in dishes. Chen Yung-chung, cofounder and CEO of Chiayi County-headquartered Thefreen Burger, outlined design of low-carbon menus to incorporate sustainable concepts.

To tackle climate change challenges, the ministry committed to working with Green Lifestyle Partnership members to extend the green lifestyle network and advance transition to sustainability. (POC-E)
