President Chiang Ching-kuo urges curbing of the inflationary trend so as to maintain price stability. Colombia Charge d'Affaires Hernando Ricardo gives a reception in honor of a visiting Colombian congressional mission. Mohamed Ali Khoguir, charge d'affaires of the Saudi Arabia embassy, presents US$100,000 to National Chung Hsing University to establish a graduate school of Arabic. 13. The 13th convention of the Pacific area of the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars is held in Taipei with more than 70 representatives from Japan, Korea, Ryukyu, Guam and the Republic of China participating. 14. Vice President Shieh Tung-min presents International Program A wards to two foreign broadcasting companies for producing special programs of interest to future Chinese generations. President Chiang Ching-kuo appoints Huang Shao-ku, secretary general of the National Security Council, as president of the Judicial Yuan following unanimous approval by the Control Yuan. 15. Rodrigo Madrigal Nieto, delegate of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Costa Rica, arrives for a seven-day visit. Charles Cross, director of the Taipei office of the American Institute in Taiwan, arrives to assume his post. 18. Dr. James E. Cheek of Howard University in Washington, D.C., heads a team of four coming for a six-day visit. Oscar Osorio Jr., the Republic of Panama's minister of commerce and industry, and Carlos Arellano Lennox, director of the Department of Marine and Re­ sources, arrive for a seven-day visit. 19. An agricultural mission of 35 members led by Tse Yu-shih leaves for 17 days in Europe. Jose Miguel Alfaro Rodriguez, second vice president of the Republic of Costa Rica, arrives for a two-day visit. 20. The Central Standing Committee of the Kuomintang nominates former Foreign Minister Shen Chang-huan as secretary general of the National Security Council. Kao Yu-jen, chief secretary of the Kuomintang Central Committee, is nominated to head the Department of Civil Affairs, Taiwan Provincial Government. Shih Chin-chih, education commissioner of the Taipei City Government, is nominated to head the Education Department of the Taiwan Provincial Government. Yu Hsueh-hai, chief personnel officer of the Taiwan Provincial Government, and Chao Shou-po, chief information officer, are promoted to the Governor's Council while retaining their current positions. President Chiang Ching-kuo receives Shih Hyung Shik, secretary general of the Democratic Republic Party of South Korea. 23. Carl W. Desch, senior vice president and cashier of Citibank and secretary and treasurer of Citicorp, arrives to preside at the opening ceremony of Citicorp Center-Taiwan. Shen Chia-ming, chairman of the Republic of China Olympic Committee, departs for meetings of the International Olympic Committee at San Juan, Puerto Rico. President Chiang Ching-kuo inspects a coal mine in the mountains near Hualien, eastern Taiwan, and encourages the miners, who are mostly retired service­ men, for their herd work. 25. Ambassador Thabo R. Makeka, representative of the Kingdom of Lesotho at the United Nations, arrives for a seven-day visit. Sulaiman Yusuf Alfraihidy, director general of the Consumer Protection Department of the Ministry of Commerce in Saudi Arabia, arrives for a six-day visit. Professor Vukan R. Tsiang decorates Dr. James Curtis Moomaw, director of Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center, in recognition of his contributions to the development of agricultural technology and research. A 22-member group from ITT led by the president, L.C. Hamilton, arrives for a two-day visit. 27. The Republic of China's rust "buy American" mission of the year led by H.K. Shao, director general of the Board of Foreign Trade, departs with a shopping list for goods worth US$850 million. His Royal Highness Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz, minister of the interior of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, arrives for a seven-day visit. 7. Bob J. Burnett, speaker protem of the House of Representatives of Wyoming, arrives for a 10-day visit. President Chiang Ching-kuo visits a reservoir site at Lake Tsao Ling in Kukang Hsiang, Yunlin County, in central Taiwan. 8. An eight-member group of the Arizona legislature headed by Leo Corbet, president of the senate, arrives for an eight-day visit. 9. Foreign Affairs Vice Minister Fredrick Chien meets with 238 overseas Chinese youths who came for summer studies. Communications Minister Lin Chin-sheng opens the first submarine cable between Taiwan and the Ryukyus at Toucheng, Ilan. The Legislative Yuan ratifies the amended overseas Chinese investment law and sends it to President Chiang Ching-kuo for promulgation. 10. Dr. Yao Bernard Beda, the second vice chairman of the Economic and Social Council of the Republic of Ivory Coast, arrives for an eight-day visit.
