Cross-strait medical interchange association launched

March 21, 2011

Medical exchanges between Taiwan and mainland China will be strengthened following the establishment of the Taiwan Cross-Strait Medical Interchange Association March 20, ROC President Ma Ying-jeou said.

“With the increasing ties between the two sides, a nongovernmental association to promote cooperation in sectors such as food safety, health care and sanitation is indispensable,” Ma said at the opening ceremony.

“The goals of the organization are to enhance the exchange of medical research through the hosting of cross-strait medical forums and to promote investment in medical businesses,” TCMIA Chairman Huang Sung-shiang said.

Investment areas include health tourism, high-tech biology such as stem cell and umbilical cord blood applications, homes for the elderly and medical cosmetology, Huang added.

In addition, the organization functions as an information platform for medical personnel who hope to start careers in mainland China, according to Chang Chau-kai, CEO of Nobel Medical (Cosmetology) Business in Taipei.

TCMIA brings together medical groups in the western medicine, Chinese medicine, dentistry, nursing and physician examination sectors, Huang said. (THN)
