Taiwan’s public and private sector efforts promoting sustainable development are paying dividends and bolstering programs aimed at sharing the country’s experiences with like-minded partners worldwide, according to President Tsai Ing-wen Nov. 18.

The government has been leaving no stone unturned in recent years to bring policy in line with international practices such as the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, Tsai said.

A key example is the inclusion of the circular economy and green energy sector in the five-plus-two innovative industries and six core strategic industries initiatives, the president said, adding that the measures are receiving a further boost from the green finance action plan launched in August to support environmentally friendly development.

Tsai made the remarks during the third Global Corporate Sustainability Forum and 13th Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards presentation ceremony in Taipei City.

According to the president, Taiwan is working to share the country’s expertise with members of the international community, as evidenced by a workshop on managing marine debris held by Taiwan, Japan, the U.S. and the Netherlands under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework earlier this month.

Taiwan Can Help promote sustainable development around the world, the president said.

GCTF was launched in June 2015 by Taiwan and the U.S. to build capacity and strengthen multilateral cooperation and has since grown to include Australia, Japan, Sweden and the Netherlands. A total of 28 workshops involving 900 plus experts and government officials from around 60 countries have been staged to date under the initiative, spanning areas such as disaster relief, education, environmental protection, humanitarian assistance, public health and women’s empowerment.

Unveiled by President Tsai Ing-wen during her 2020 inauguration and building on the five-plus-two innovative industries program, the six core strategic industries are set to transform Taiwan into a dynamic force in the global economy. They comprise information and digital technology, cybersecurity, biotech and medical technology, national defense, green and renewable energy, and strategic stockpile industries. (YCH-E)
