Tsai vows to make southern Taiwan integral part of global supply chains

President Tsai Ing-wen vowed to shape Kaohsiung City into a key player in making southern Taiwan an integral part of the world economy Dec. 6, underscoring the government’s commitment to cementing the country’s position in global supply chains.
 
The government is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to promote the development of innovation industries in southern Taiwan, the president said. Her administration is committing more than NT$10 billion (US$360 million) to developing the Asia New Bay Area 5G AIoT Innovation Hub over the next five years, she added.
 
The president made the remarks while attending the opening ceremony of the hub in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan.
 
According to Tsai, a banking and finance institute will be established in the southern metropolis to cultivate talents while ensuring the financial sector is aligned with international standards. A technology corridor in southern Taiwan will be built up, connecting science parks in Kaohsiung City, Tainan City and Pingtung County, the president added.
 
Other high-profile attendees at the event included Chen Chi-mai, mayor of Kaohsiung City; and Lin Chuan-neng, vice minister of Economic Affairs.
 
In addition, transportation and water resources in southern Taiwan are being placed front and center in national development plans under the Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program to facilitate the building of industrial clusters, Tsai said.
 
Launched in 2017, the FIDP is a comprehensive plan aimed at addressing Taiwan’s key infrastructure needs for the next 30 years. It includes projects spanning railway development, digital infrastructure, aquatic environments, food safety, green energy, urban-rural development, boosting birth rates and childcare facilities, and nurturing talent and employment.
