The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jan. 10 expressed its sincere gratitude to Taro Aso for his firm backing of cross-strait peace and stability.

According to the MOFA, Taro Aso, vice president of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, said during a domestic political briefing Jan. 8 in Fukuoka prefecture that with over 20,000 Japanese expatriates residing in Taiwan, Japan will assist by sending submarines and warships should a cross-strait conflict break out. He added that Taiwan’s security is closely linked with Japan’s.

Aso also emphasized Taiwan’s importance to Japan as a friend and partner in a speech at the 2023 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue in August last year. Cross-strait peace and security is indispensable to the safety and prosperity of the international community, he said, adding that like-minded countries should work together in countering authoritarian expansion to prevent a war from breaking out.

The ministry reiterated that Taiwan is on the front line in the fight against authoritarianism. Its government and citizens are deeply committed to enhancing the country’s self-defense capabilities and will continue collaborating with other nations to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
