The appointment of Raymond Greene as the new director of American Institute in Taiwan’s Taipei office is warmly welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 29.
According to the MOFA, Greene is a senior diplomat who has been serving as the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo’s deputy chief of mission since 2021. Prior to that, he worked as deputy director of AIT from 2018 to 2021, where he facilitated considerable progress in bilateral relations, the ministry said, citing the U.S.’ donation of 2.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses during the pandemic, the relaxation of U.S. State Department guidelines on engagement with Taiwan, the resumption of two-way Trade and Investment Framework Agreement council meetings, the launch of the Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue, the conclusion of memorandums of understanding on coastal patrols and technological cooperation, and regular arms sales.
In Washington, Greene was director of Japan and East Asian Economic Affairs at the National Security Council and director of the Office of Economic Policy in the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. In the latter position, he was elected chair of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum’s Economic Committee.
The MOFA lauded Greene’s valuable experience in Taiwan-U.S. relations and Indo-Pacific affairs, adding that he has actively demonstrated his firm backing of Taiwan with concrete actions. The government looks forward to further strengthening the two countries’ rock-solid ties during his tenure, the ministry said. (POC-E)
