ROC Vice President Wu Den-yih arrived in the Dominican Republic Aug. 15 on the first leg of his two-nation Latin America tour aimed at boosting robust bilateral relations.
Wu, who is representing President Ma Ying-jeou at the Aug. 16 swearing-in of Danilo Medina, president-elect of the Dominican Republic, was greeted at the airport by Dominican Deputy Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Trullols and ROC Dominican Ambassador Thomas Hou.
After a warm exchange of pleasantries, the vice president departed for his hotel where he was welcomed by hundreds of ROC expatriates.
During a meeting later in the day with Medina and his deputy Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez, Wu presented the former with a congratulatory letter from Ma and pledged to take ROC-Dominican relations to new heights.
“We will continue bolstering two-way cooperation and exchanges spanning areas such as agriculture and vocational training,” Wu said.
The vice president later joined other heads of states and dignitaries from around the world at a dinner banquet hosted by outgoing Dominican President Leonel Fernandez.
Wu is set to tour ROC-Dominican cooperation projects and attend the opening ceremony of a job training facility before leaving for Belize, another ROC diplomatic ally in the region.
The vice president will meet with Prime Minister Dean Barrow to congratulate him on his re-election in March and inspect the results of ROC-funded development programs.
Wu is scheduled to wrap up his 12-day visit to the region Aug. 24. (JSM)
