A new advisory group will be created by the Ministries of Agriculture and Foreign Affairs to help Taiwan’s allies and partner countries develop smart agriculture, the MOFA said March 24.

The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and MOA Minister Chen Junne-jih during a meeting in Taipei City. The group will integrate public- and private-sector resources to promote the flagship smart agriculture program under the government’s Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project.

According to the MOFA, the initiative aims to help allies and partner countries apply artificial intelligence and digital technologies to develop precision agriculture, promote global food security and strengthen agricultural sustainability and resilience to address climate change challenges, while expanding the international reach of Taiwan’s farming sector.

The MOA said the initiative will prioritize cooperation on aquaculture, agricultural weather forecasts, precision agriculture, supply chains and logistics to enhance production efficiency, explore mutually beneficial business opportunities and cultivate youth talent.

In particular, the two ministries have identified three major tasks for the project: expanding agricultural cooperation with the Philippines via the Cabinet’s economic diplomacy task force; expanding aquaculture collaboration with Palau to boost the ally’s seafood production and tourism appeal; and exploring the possibility of setting up a regional seedling center in the Caribbean. The two ministers also exchanged views on the agricultural delegation scheduled to visit the U.S. in September, the MOFA said. (SFC-E)
