Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is in Paraguay on an eight-day visit to celebrate the 68th anniversary of diplomatic ties and deepen Taiwan’s relationship with the South American ally.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin arrived in Paraguay late on July 10 and met with his counterpart Rubén Ramírez the next morning.  They discussed progress on infrastructure, smart medicine and smart transportation projects, and technical education, as well as trade and investment.

On the evening of July 11 a celebration honoring the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Paraguay drew over 250 guests, including Raúl Latorre, president of the ally’s Chamber of Deputies, and César Diesel, president of the Supreme Court. The ministry said that Lin pledged in his remarks at the event to deepen industrial cooperation through Taiwan’s prowess in information communication technologies.

Ramírez expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s long-standing support of his country’s agriculture and animal husbandry, education, infrastructure, medicine, and public health in his response. He also praised the Taiwan-Paraguay Polytechnic University project, which has cultivated over 170 engineers to date.

The next day, July 12, Lin took Taiwan entrepreneurs in the sectors of artificial intelligence, food processing, smart manufacturing and logistics to the Taiwan-Paraguay Smart Technology Park, accompanied by Ramírez, Minister of Industry and Commerce Javier Giménez and other high-ranking officials. The MOFA added that the facility is a cooperative project that resulted from President Lai Ching-te’s 2023 visit to Paraguay as then President Tsai Ing-wen’s vice president and special envoy.
