Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said that Taiwan is committed to deepening cooperation with Canada in the fields of security and technology while strengthening partnerships to safeguard regional peace and stability.

Hsiao made the remarks while receiving a Canadian national security delegation at the Presidential Office in Taipei City Sept. 22. The group includes Tom Lawson and Wayne Eyre, former defense staff chiefs.

Taiwan and Canada enjoy a close relationship on economy, technology, trade and countering gray zone coercion, Hsiao said, noting that the two sides have also established substantive exchanges on culture and Indigenous affairs.

The vice president added that defense and security are emerging issues of common concern in recent years, and restated Taiwan’s stance that cross-strait peace and stability is crucial to global interests. She thanked Canada for reiterating the importance of peace across the Taiwan Strait and the regional freedom of navigation in global events like Group of Seven meetings.

Hsaio said that there is great potential for collaboration between Taiwan and Canada in industries across the board. She cited a memorandum of understanding on a dark vessel detection system signed last month, and the demonstration of anti-drone defense technologies by Canadian manufacturers in the Taipei Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition that wrapped up Sept. 20. The vice president concluded by emphasizing that the two sides share strategic interests in emerging defense technologies and defending regional peace and stability. (YCH-E)
