Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said Oct. 20 that Taiwan is committed to deepening its partnership with Australia. She expressed appreciation for the country’s reiteration of the importance of cross-strait peace and stability and for its support of Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations.

Hsiao made the remarks while meeting with a parliamentary delegation from Australia at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The group included members of the House of Representatives, Steve Georganas and Darren Chester, and Senators James McGrath and Richard Colbeck.

The bilateral relationship between Taiwan and Australia is going strength from strength, the vice president said. Australia is a staunch partner in the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, she noted, adding that Taiwan, Australia, Canada, Japan and the U.S., have been working together to tackle issues ranging from cyber security and public health under the GCTF.

Australia is an important trading partner for Taiwan, and the economies of both countries are highly complementary, Hsiao said, adding that Australia has also long assisted Taiwan in strengthening its energy resilience.

The vice president went on to say that many expatriates have contributed to diverse development in Australia and added that Taiwan welcomes young Australians to study, work and experience the cultural environment of Taiwan. (YCH-E)
