MOFA welcomes senior legislators from Northeastern US

The visit by a delegation of state legislators from the Northeastern U.S. is sincerely welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nov. 3.
 
Comprising senior state lawmakers from New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont, the group is in Taiwan Nov. 3-8 for exchanges on issues spanning trade and investment, high-tech cooperation, talent cultivation and energy security.
 
During a banquet held Nov. 3 in Taipei City, Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi said that Taiwan and New England can leverage their respective competitive advantages to expand cooperation in higher education and high-tech industries.
 
Chen said 23 U.S. states and the territory of Guam have established offices in Taipei and urged more states to follow suit and to sign driver license agreements with Taiwan to boost people-to-people exchanges.
 
Speaking on behalf of the group, acting President of the Rhode Island Senate Hanna M. Gallo praised the free and open spirit of Taiwan. New England is home to many prestigious higher education institutions with strong research and development capabilities, she said, adding that the two sides can enhance cooperation in the fields of education and technology.
 
The MOFA said the government will continue to deepen values-based partnership with friends of Taiwan in the U.S. to jointly safeguard global democracy. (SFC-E)
