Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and Sports Minister Lee Yang held a meeting Nov. 5 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Taipei City, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation mechanisms for international events, expanding relevant exchanges with allies and promoting equality in sports.
The work between the ministries will help display Taiwan’s athletic prowess internationally, Lin said. Although Taiwan faces suppression and unfair treatment in the global arena in both diplomacy and sports, the government is committed to implementing equal sports participation and higher visibility for the country.
According to the MOFA, the ministers discussed several cooperative initiatives, among them, an athlete cultivation project for Pacific allies, including sending coaches to allies and training in different locations. They also considered how best to support Taiwanese athletes and raise Taiwan’s profile for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The ministry added that both ministries will send a delegation to participate in the International Working Group on Women and Sport summit to be held next July in Birmingham, U.K.
Lin emphasized the concept that everyone is a diplomat, the MOFA said. Speaking of significant results achieved by Team Taiwan in international sports events in recent years, Lin pledged that the ministry and its overseas offices will continue to support athletes to achieve their best, and form a “Team of Teams” with the Ministry of Sports to advance the country’s sports diplomacy.
