National Taiwan University of Science and Technology architecture graduate student Xu Yu-zun won the top prize May 6 at the “Paper Idea – Love Nature Design” awards for the unique design of his paper brick wall creation.

In line with the environmental protection theme of the contest held by the Su Ho Memorial Paper Culture Foundation in Taipei, Xu used old recycled newspapers to make the bricks for the multi-surfaced wall whose design allows light and greenery to naturally pass through its surface.

Xu spent months constructing the wall with 1,700 bricks meticulously created by tearing nearly 800 kilograms of old newspapers into strips and mixing them with a white glue substance before forming them into blocks and allowing them to dry.

The task was made even more painstaking by the fact that Hsu decided to design three different types of bricks in order to give his paper wall creation a stylistic appearance that calls to mind images of waves rushing forward in a dazzling turbulence.

Xu’s creation will be on display for members of the general public to enjoy at a green living exhibition being held through mid-July at the Su Ho Memorial Paper Museum located at No. 68, Sec. 2, Changan East Road in Taipei City. (SB)
