Vice President Vincent C. Siew announced June 29 that a party celebrating the ROC’s 100th anniversary will be held Oct. 10, 2011 in Taichung City, central Taiwan.
“Taiwan enjoys the highest level of freedom, economic prosperity, education, cultural diversity, democracy, stability and peace in ethnic Chinese history,” Siew said. “We are proud of our achievements and would like to share our joy with the world on the nation’s birthday.”
The party is set to take place in the Fulfillment Amphitheater, an outdoor space with a capacity of 6,500. A variety of festive programs will be presented, with the renowned local playwright and director Stan Lai in charge.
The party is expected to be a change from conventional National Day concerts, and may even be broadcast live internationally.
Emile Chih-jen Sheng, minister of the Council for Cultural Affairs and chief executive officer of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Centenary Foundation, which is in charge of the nation’s 100th anniversary celebrations, noted that there will be 14 other major activities taking place around the country throughout the year.
These include the “Listen to the Future and Dream a Fulfilling Dream” concert November 12, 2011, the birthday of the nation’s founding father, Sun Yat-sen. Set to take place in the Kaohsiung National Stadium, it will be the largest musical event in the history of Chinese-speaking peoples. (THN)
