Taiwan’s delegation of six students was named the top winner at the 2010 International Junior Science Olympiad in Abuja, Nigeria, the Ministry of Education said Dec. 12.
The competition took place in the African capital Dec. 2 to 11, where a total of 180 students under 16 years of age from 35 countries tested their knowledge and skills in mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry and geosciences.
Four of the Taiwanese students grabbed gold medals, while the other two were honored with silver. Taiwan also garnered its third country award this time.
Gold medalist Huang Kai-chi, now in his first year at Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, was also named Overall Winner and Best Theory Winner.
Officials said participating in international competitions like this helps local students gain valuable experience and learn about world trends in scientific development.
The IJSO awards gold medals to the top 10 percent of all participants, while silvers and bronzes are given to next 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively.
Taiwan has taken part in the IJSO since its debut in 2004, bringing home a total of 35 golds, seven silvers, a bronze in the group experiment examination, six best theory awards, three overall winner awards and three country awards, the ministry said. (THN)
