Taiwanese Nobel laureate Lee Yuan-tseh was presented with Italy’s Ettore Majorana Erice-Science for Peace Prize at a ceremony in the Vatican Jan. 29. Lee, 75, was recognized for his efforts to promote scientific endeavors sans frontiers. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1986 and served as Academia Sinica president from 1994 to 2006. Lee will assume the presidency of Paris-headquartered International Council for Science in October.

 

Taiwan was selected Jan. 30 as the host of the 2013 World Baseball Classics qualifiers. A total of 16 national teams, including the home side, are set to do battle in the November 2012 tourney. The top-four finishers will go through to the classics, which are being held for the first time since 2009.

 

Computex Taipei, the largest computer and IT trade show in Asia, announced Jan. 28 that it has increased its number of registered exhibitors by 8 percent. The event, which runs May 31 to June 4, will see more than 1,800 foreign and domestic companies set up 5,200 booths in the Taipei World Trade Center. Organizer Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) predicts Computex Taipei stands a good chance of surpassing Germany’s Cebit trade show by 2015. (JSM)
