Yushan aims for New Seven Wonders list

February 09, 2011

The Yushan National Park Administration is making every effort to drum up support to get Taiwan’s tallest peak included in the New Seven Wonders of the World, voting for which will continue until Nov. 11.

The Swiss-based New 7 Wonder Foundation has been holding the contest to solicit votes worldwide for the New Seven Wonders. Taiwan’s Yushan has not only been listed as one of the world’s 261 scenic highlights, but has also made it through many rounds of preliminary voting to become one of 28 candidate sites entering the final selection stage.

The park noted that besides being able to cast votes on the Internet, people can also send in their votes via text message. A park official said that, aside from arranging with local telecom operators to provide preferential text messaging rates for those using their cell phones to cast votes, they are also holding a drawing for prizes to attract more votes.

The park has set up places to cast votes at various tourist destinations around Taiwan, as well as assigning personnel to assist people in voting in the park’s visitor centers. People are encouraged to cast their vote to support Yushan at the New Seven Wonders of the World website via the park’s website.

Chen Lung-sheng, director of park administration, stressed that besides mobilizing the public here to vote for Yushan, the park will work with sister national parks in Italy and Japan to market Yushan overseas and seek support from international friends. Chen added that a recently produced film highlighting the natural splendor of Yushan is the park’s best bet for convincing voters around the globe that Yushan should be ranked in the top seven.
