Young designers shine at YODEX

May 20, 2011

The 2011 Young Designers’ Exhibition, the largest student event of its kind in the world, opened at the Taipei World Trade Center May 20.

“YODEX is an important platform for displaying the work of rising designers and allowing enterprises to find the talent they need,” said event organizer Taiwan Design Center.

“It is also a place for school-industry collaboration and international exchange,” said Chou Neng-chuan, deputy director-general of co-organizer the Industrial Development Bureau.

“What makes YODEX really great is the ferment of ideas among student designers,” said Hsu Wei-tse, a fourth-year industrial design student at Shih Chien University in Taipei. “You’ll get suggestions you’d never think of on your own, and these will help improve your work.”

One feature of the exhibition is the 2011 iF concept design awards ceremony. “These awards, known as the Oscars of the design industry, will be presented in Asia for the first time,” TDC President Wang Chih-kang said, adding that they will help boost the international visibility of Taiwan designs.

More than 3,500 designs covering products, graphics, packaging, space, fashion and other categories from Taiwan and nine foreign countries, including Canada, France, Japan and Spain, will be exhibited, Wang pointed out.

The show, running until May 23, is expected to attract over 90,000 visitors, he said. (THN)
