The Government Information Office launched an Internet competition for foreigners promoting Taiwan and its tourism at a news conference Oct. 18.

“Taiwan’s natural beauty, varied cuisine, quality shopping environment and friendly people have made the country a favorite destination for both group travelers and backpackers,” GIO Minister Philip Yang said at the event, which featured video footage of Yang introducing the Raohe Night Market in Taipei. The video is available on the activity website to help increase interest in visiting Taiwan.

Through the three-stage competition “Say Hi to Taiwan with Your Photo and Win a Trip,” Yang said, “we hope to attract more visitors to Taiwan to discover its many beauties.”

Foreign netizens are invited to upload photos expressing their passion for Taiwan to the activity website before Nov. 21. Three winning teams, determined through online voting by Nov. 30, will be awarded NT$100,000 (US$3,335) for a one-week trip in the country.

Then one-day tour proposals designed by local city and county governments, incorporating scenic sites, food and gifts, will be put online and opened to polling between Nov. 21 and Dec. 8, to choose Taiwan’s top three attractions.

In the last stage, the three winning teams will travel to the top three destinations between Dec. 12 and 19, as well as visiting other locations of their choice. They are required to host a Facebook site related to the activity and post daily reports on their travels.

When the contest concludes, the GIO will confer awards for best content, best picture and most popular, with an NT$30,000 prize for each. (THN)
