Four Taiwanese movies will be screened at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival, according to Government Information Office Minister Philip Yang Feb. 2.

To have four Taiwanese works shown at one of the world’s top four film festivals is a great achievement for Taiwan’s movie industry, Yang said. “Such events are important not just for presenting pictures, but also for copyright trading, fundraising and exchanging experience,” he added.

“Love,” a production by Doze Chen-zer Niu on Taiwan’s urban romance, and “10+10,” a film featuring the uniqueness of Taiwanese culture jointly shot by 20 directors including Chu Yen-ping, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Wang Shau-di, will be screened under the Panorama Special category.

“Eat Drink Man Woman II–Joyful Reunion,” a movie by Tsao Jui-yuan that touches upon food, love and family relations, as well as “The Raw and the Cooked,” a documentary co-produced by Taiwan’s Public Television Service and German director Monika Treut on Taiwan’s culinary traditions and culture, will be shown under the Culinary Cinema section.

In addition, in the main exhibition hall—Martin-Gropius-Bau—of the festival’s film market, 15 Taiwanese production companies will seek buyers for 60 movies, including “Bear It,” “Din Tao: Leader of the Parade” and “Return to Burma.”

“The fact that the Taiwan Pavilion will be in the main venue for the first time indicates that event organizers are paying more and more attention to Taiwanese films,” Yang said.

Now in its 62nd year, the festival screens 400 international and European movies and attracts over 19,000 cinema professionals from 115 countries annually, according to event organizers.

The festival this year will run from Feb. 9 to 19. (THN)
