Taiwan comic artist Cory has received a Silver Award at the fifth International Manga Award sponsored by the Japanese government, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Feb. 16.
Cory’s winning work “Make a Wish! Da Xi” portrays a teenager’s journey of reconciliation with love, death and his family following an encounter with an angel at a hospital.
The Gold Award winner was “I Kill Giants,” a 2008 graphic novel by Spain-based cartoonist J. M. Ken Niimura and U.S. writer Joe Kelly, which depicts a socially isolated girl battling with demons both real and imagined.
Cory was one of three Silver Award winners, the other two being Pan Liping of mainland China and Tanis Werasakwong of Thailand. The award committee received 145 entries from 30 countries and territories. Among them, 38 were from Thailand, 21 from Malaysia and 16 from mainland China.
“Dream Land,” by Taiwan comics artist Lin Ting-wei, was one of ten entries to receive an honorable mention, according to MOFA.
Cory’s works have garnered a bevy of honors, including the 2011 Golden Comic Awards organized by the ROC Government Information Office and the eighth Golden Dragon Award, the leading original comics competition in mainland China.
The Japan contest was introduced in 2007 by the then foreign minister Taro Aso, who later served as prime minister for a year. (HZW)
