The Golf Writers Association of America has named Taiwan golfing sensation Yani Tseng the Female Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

“To any golfer, this award represents both an affirmation and encouragement, and I am truly grateful to all those who voted for me,” Tseng said April 4 at the award presentation ceremony in Augusta, Ga.

During her speech the 23-year-old Tseng recalled the sense of admiration and awe she felt when her idols Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa were presented with the same award.

Tseng, who last year won 12 LPGA titles including two majors, was the hands down favorite among golf writers, garnering an overwhelming 95 percent of the vote.

“I want to thank everyone who cast their ballot for me because they believe I performed well on the golf course, but of course my performance off the course wasn’t that bad either,” she joked.

The other GWAA award winners for 2011 were Luke Donald, named male player of the year, and Tom Lehman, honored as senior player of the year. (SB)
