Taiwan-American basketball player Jeremy Lin and homegrown golfing sensation Yani Tseng have been chosen as two of the “Most Influential People in the World” for 2012 by Time magazine.

“Lin’s story is a great lesson for kids everywhere because it debunks and defangs so many of the prejudices and stereotypes that unfairly hold children back,” Time said in its April 18 issue, noting that his experiences prove that Asian-Americans, too, could become NBA point guards through hard work and perseverance.

Lin’s story tells children that “if you show grit, discipline and integrity, you too can get an opportunity to overcome the odds,” the magazine said.

Tseng, currently ranked the world’s No. 1 female golfer, was described as “a rare talent with the ability to energize a new generation of LPGA fans. [Her] infectious smile and genuine enthusiasm for golf create an aura that grabs the attention of galleries and living rooms, captivating even casual sports fans.”

“[Tseng’s] blend of skill, grace and work ethic will be a powerful force on the LPGA tour for years to come,” Time wrote, adding that she will become an even better player as she becomes more experienced.

Six athletes made Time’s top 100 list, with Tseng the only female. The others were Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, Argentinean soccer player Lionel Messi, South African double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius and American football player Tim Tebow. (HZW)
