Taiwan’s festivals are being showcased to draw tourists with a series of documentary films and 30-second commercials co-produced with National Geographic Channel, the Tourism Bureau under the ROC Ministry of Transportation and Communications announced July 12.

The first episode, “Electric Techno Neon God: San Tai Zi,” was broadcast in English July 13 to 25 nations in Asia. This was an English version of what had been a big hit locally when originally aired in Holo, a widely spoken dialect.

The Taiwan Tourism Events calendar presents a full year’s festivals, covering religion, folk customs, sports, and innovative arts and craft activities, allowing domestic and foreign tourists to appreciate cultural happening year-round across the nation, the bureau said. Topics chosen for the commercials cover a full range of entertainment, culinary, shopping and romantic subjects, in animated clips created by the bureau and NGC.

The clips are designed to raise the international profile of Taiwan’s festivals. Other documentary features include “Inside: The Emperor’s Treasure,” “Megacities: Taipei” and “Cradle of Mandopop,” which will introduce the island’s historic treasures, city lifestyles and musical currents, in addition to folk festivals.

To coincide with a series of international tourism trade shows being held throughout Asia in July and August, the commercial series will be shown on NGC, Fox, Star World and other overseas cable networks. Target audiences include 65 million households in 25 Asian countries, such as Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand.(SDH)
